While silk was not the only product traded on the Silk Road by any means, it was typically the most expensive.  The knowledge of moriculture, the cultivation of mulberry trees which provided food for the “silk worm,” a larval moth of the bombyx morii species who spun silk for its cocoon, and sericulture, the ability to raise moths and harvest their silk, was a closely guarded secret, making silk all the more precious. In this unit we will learn about silk production.
